Trained as a coach painter, London-born John Frederick Herring was a prolific and highly sought-after sporting artist, enjoying a successful career as one of the preeminent animal painters of the mid-nineteenth century. In this scene, he demonstrates his talent not only for representing his animal subjects but also for closely observing details of the rocky landscape.
