Folding Screen (Byobu) "Sunset Glow" by Nanbu Yoshihide (1920-2002) Japan, Toyama Prefecture 1958, Showa period Lacquer and eggshell on wood Funds from the David A. Yeakley Bequest 2012.296 Entitled "Sunset Glow" (Yubai), this folding screen was decorated with shelving rocks appearing before the red glow of the setting sun. From Inami in Toyama prefecture, Nanbu Yoshihide was born to a family that built and decorated temples and shrines. He took over his family lacquer ware business and began to exhibit at the government-sponsored Japanese Art Exhibition (Nitten) in 1950. In 1989, he was decorated with the Yellow Ribbon Medal (oju hosho) for his contributions as an artist.

At least 2007-2012, Kaigedo Japanese Art, Seattle WA, acquired at auction in Japan; 2012, DAM collection, museum purchase.
