Tearoom Folding Screen (furosaki byobu) with Sand Dune and Spider Lilies by Kawabata Kinsa V (Kawabata Miyoshi), (1915-2000) Japan, Osaka 1953, Showa period Lacquer on wood Funds from the David A. Yeakley Bequest 2012.295 Born in Nara, Kawabata Miyoshi worked in Osaka. He began studying lacquer in 1928 at the age of twelve under his adoptive father Kinsa IV. He inherited the family title in 1963 and became Kinsa V. He created this low two-panel screen in 1953 for the ninth annual Japanese Art Exhibition (Nitten). The screen was designed for use in a tearoom, placed where the host sat to prepare tea for the guests. Executed in various colored lacquers, the offset composition of sand dunes and spider lilies would balance the arrangement of tea utensils positioned in front of the screen.
