Harry Tyler built his own looms, drew most of his own designs, and, with help from his family, dyed the yarn for his coverlets. His known works date between 1834 and 1858, so this 1835 coverlet is an early example. The date and his trademark lion appear in the bottom corner squares, with the initials of the coverlet’s owner on the lion’s chest. Each year Tyler changed some element of the pattern or a detail of his lion logo.
Known Provenance
Inherited by Barbara Poytress Dallow [Fort Collins, CO, b. 1948] from her mother; gifted December 2011 by Barbara Poytress Dallow by the Denver Art Museum
