Incense Container (Kogo) with Vine and Berries (Sanekazura) by Tsuishu Yozei XX (Tsuishu Toyogoro), (1880-1952) Japan, Kyoto about 1916-26, Taisho period Lacquer Funds from the Sam F. and Freda R. Davis Charitable Trust 2011.282 Born to a Kyoto family that specialized in carved lacquer (choshitsu) since the 1300s, Tsuishu Yozei XX revitalized and modernized the art form. To make this piece, he built up layer upon layer of lacquer on a wood core, then carved back through the hundreds of layers of lacquer to create a three-dimensional design. Depending on the depth of carving, different levels of color lacquer were revealed.
