By subtly manipulating the appearance of everyday objects and scenes, and by altering the contexts in which viewers encounter them, Richard Artschwager encourages us to reevaluate our pre-conceived notions about life, art, perception, and illusion. In Painted Desert (Green), artificial textures and a flattened perspective call attention to the manufactured nature of this landscape. While the painted desert is a location of real landscape, this work is hardly a traditional landscape painting. The spatial irregularities and tangible materials of what may at first suggest a conventional landscape painting reveal the deceptions involved in creating a work of art.
