Plaque with Mount Horai and Cranes by Tsuishu Yozei XX (Tsuishu Toyogoro), (1880-1952) Japan, Kyoto about 1920-1940, late Taisho-early Showa period Lacquer and gold on wood Gift of Jeffrey Cline and William Knospe 2011.240 Tsuishu Yozei XX created this image of Mount Hōrai with the carved lacquer (choshitsu) technique employed by his family since the 1300s. He built up a thick substrate of colored lacquer then carved through the hundreds of layers to create a design in high relief, revealing the different colors of lacquer at varying depths. The auspicious subject of the plaque would be familiar to most Japanese. The artist combined Mount Horai, the mythical island of the immortals, and cranes, symbols of good fortune and longevity.
