In "Telephones", Marclay appropriates telephone scenes from movies old and new, and then re-sequences them to create a video montage. The result is an absurd performance that mixes a variety of Hollywood genres and eras into a single telephone conversation. For many, the familiar scenes and sounds trigger memories and associations, but the work also exists as a meditation on the relationship between culture and medium.
