Alcinda Weir commissioned this quilt from an unknown maker as a wedding present for her son, Fred Weir, and his bride, Jennie Reed. A fabric with linked rings refers to the wedding; other personal references include initials and swatches from the groom’s baby clothes. The two groups of children embroidered in the border are based on illustrations by Kate Greenaway (1846–1901), a popular artist and author of the time.
Known Provenance
Commissioned 1891 by Alice Weir [Indiana]; inherited by Mrs. Marilyn Weir Dosher [Arvada, CO, 1927-2009]; gifted November 2004 by Mrs. Marilyn Weir Dosher to the Denver Art Museum
