The artist Gu Wenda has gained international renown for his scrims of human hair. He attempts to mix languages and cultures in these weavings. He trained with a master calligrapher in China, so many of these hair scrims incorporate calligraphy, except that the ideograms are only derived from traditional Chinese and synthesize characters from Western languages. They are usually unreadable. Like many contemporary Chinese artists, Wenda is concerned with the process behind the making of the artworks, and so considers himself a performance artist as well.
