Miniature Feline-form Rectangular Bowl
The form of this vessel resembles a miniature stone metate, with a shallow rectangular basin serving as the body of a feline. The vessel is supported by four crouching legs. A bifurcated tail projects from the basin's rear, and connects to each of the back legs. The head projects from the front of the basin and appears to gnaw on an unidentified item grasped by the front paws. The top of the hollow head and neck is pierced by decorative openwork. Deeply incised interlace patterns ornament the feline's legs and the sides of the basin. --Margaret Young-Sanchez
