Wheat Fields, Dine’s monumental painted bronze sculpture, reflects both the specific landscape surrounding his home in Walla Walla, Washington, as well as a profound meditation on man’s relationship to the land. The artist made the skull from a block of wood he carved with a chain saw, and gathered nearly all of the other objects from recycling facilities and junkyards. After months of trial-and-error assembly, the artist had each object cast in bronze, soldered together, and painted or patinated to mimic the original object’s texture, including the mud on the wheels. Each object is so realistic that the viewer assumes it to be what it appears; it is difficult to believe that this verisimilitude is actually an elaborate façade of paint and patina on bronze.
