Nakabayashi Chikuto
Japanese, 1776-1853
Landscape in the Manner of Huang Gongwang
1810, Edo Period
Ink and color on silk
Gift of David and Lois S. Ferguson
1985.385

The practice of painting in the manner of a great master from an earlier perios was an age-old tradition in China; in Japan, Nakabayashi Chikuto followed a similar path. Although he may have never seen an actual painting by Huang Gongwang, he had access to interpretations of Huang Gongwang's style in works by later Chinese painters. Here he combines dry brushwork and light color washes to establish a connection with Huang Gongwang.
