Raymond Jonson was one of the founding members of the Transcendental Painting Group in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1938. Through new concepts of space, color, light, and design, the group sought to carry painting beyond the appearance of the physical world to imaginative realms that were idealistic and spiritual. They were the first American artists to publish a manifesto on their approach and commitment to nonrepresentational painting.
