Surin Province in lower Northeastern Thailand was once part of the greatest Khmer empire based on at Angkor in present day-day Cambodia. The excavation of a number of Khmer kilns in the area indicates that this was a manufacturing center for Khmer brown glazed stoneware, of which this small jar is a fine example. Its compressed globular shape and narrow mouth suggest that it was used for the storage of a liquid, probably oil or honey.
