Oil Jar Thailand, Surin Province 1000-1200s, Khmer period Stoneware with brown glaze Gift of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Frasche' 1983.237 Surin Province in lower Northeastern Thailand was once part of the greatest Khmer empire based on at Angkor in present day-day Cambodia. The excavation of a number of Khmer kilns in the area indicates that this was a manufacturing center for Khmer brown glazed stoneware, of which this small jar is a fine example. Its compressed globular shape and narrow mouth suggest that it was used for the storage of a liquid, probably oil or honey.
Known Provenance
Probably (Carol Wu), Bangkok; purchase, James W. Frasché, Denver, CO, around 1971; gift, Denver Art Museum, 1983
