Claes Oldenburg, Clothespin - 4 Foot Version A.P. lV, 1974. Bronze and stainless steel on acrylic base; 48 x 16 1/4 x 7 in. Denver Art Museum: Funds from Alliance For Contemporary Art, Brownstein, Hyatt, Farber & Madden, Kenneth M. Good., 1981.11. © 2018 Claes Oldenburg.
Oldenburg's monumental sculptures celebrate the significance and beauty of everyday things – often making subjects much bigger than life. This work is a one-twelfth size scale model of the 48 1/2 foot high sculpture in Centre Square, Philadelphia, installed during the bicentennial year, 1976. It's spring forms the numbers '7' and '6'. The form of the two halves of the clothespin also alludes to Brancusi's famous sculpture, The Kiss, which is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art collection.
