The story of the Hindu goddess Durga’s victory against the buffalo demon Mahisha was popular throughout India and was quickly incorporated into Indonesian imagery. Here Durga holds various weapons of the gods, including a discus or wheel, sword, spear, rope, and shield. She stands directly on the defeated demon and wears a simple skirt accompanied by sashes at her waist, heavy necklaces, and pendant earrings.
