On a cross-country road trip, Winogrand took several photographs through the windshield of his car or a rolled-down side window. In Colorado, he stopped between Denver and Colorado Springs to indulge in a visual joke: low sunlight stretched the shadow of his car into a pyramid shape that mimics the silhouette of Castle Rock in the distance. This is a witty variation on the roadside snapshots that have long documented family car trips.
