Early Summer Landscape by Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) Japan 1832, Edo period Ink on silk Gift of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Argabrite 1978.167 Executed in ink on silk, this Japanese landscape of majestic mountains and waterfalls derives from a style developed by Chinese scholar-painters. In this landscape, Baiitsu captures the damp atmosphere of an early summer day. The rounded mountain peaks, clumps of trees, low houses waterfall, and winding stream are familiar elements in Chinese landscape painting.
