During the Kangxi period, many Chinese artists were aware of perspective techniques introduced by European missionaries, and potters at the Jingdezhen kilns adopted this technique to paint complex landscapes on their porcelains. This brilliantly painted vase, one of the finest examples of its kind, was extensively painted with a literati landscape consisting of mountains, lakes, pavilions, and scholars fishing on boats or along the lakeshore. Its shape imitates ancient Chinese bronze zun vessels.
