This blue-and-white porcelain charger has a decorative pattern and foliated edge typical of kraakware, a Chinese export ceramic. Starting in the 1600s, Chinese kilns began to produce foliate-edged blue-and-white porcelains for Asian markets, and these porcelains eventually reached Europe, primarily as a Dutch import. This kind of kraakware, also characterized by its loose painting style, was produced in mass quantities at Jingdezhen and Zhangzhou kilns during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In addition to its popularity in Europe, kraakware was particularly favored by the Ottoman court.
