Bottle with Dragons
1300s, Goryeo dynasty (981‒1392)
Korea
Porcelain
Gift of John and Celeste Fleming
1972.13

The fine dragon and lotus petal designs on this bottle are created with white and red slip inlay (sanggam), a decorative technique that originated in Korea. Designs are carved into the hardened surface of a clay object, and then these incised markings are filled with slip, a liquid mixture of clay and water. The ceramic is fired twice; during the second firing, the white slip stays white but the red slip (copper oxide) turns black. The development of this inlay technique, the use of underglaze copper oxide, and the ability to control the firing atmosphere are among the achievements of Goryeo potters.
