The figure of Christ resting upon the carved ivory base on the left refers also to King David who was a shepherd as a young boy and to the Bible’s Twenty-third Psalm.  In the upper portion, tiny birds drink from the psalm’s “still waters,” while below them David reclines in the “green pastures” mentioned in the psalm.
