The small size of this robe indicates that it was made for a young male, yet its decoration is almost as complex as that of an adult robe. A child or teenaged male of an aristocratic family would be required to attend formal ceremonies if the father died, so this kind of garment was likely made for such occasions. Formal robes were also made for princes and young emperors, such as Emperor Shunzhi (reigned 1644–1661), who was installed at six years old, and Emperor Kangxi (reigned 1662–1722), who ascended to the throne when he was eight years old.
