Known Provenance
House of Schad von Mittelbiberach; [1] by inheritance in 1840 to Count von Leutrum Ertingen, Stuttgart. Prof. Hugo Freiherr von Haberman, Munich, by 1899 [2]. Rodolphe Kann [1845-1905], Paris; acquired with Kann collection in 1907 by (Duveen Brothers, Inc, New York, no. 114 of catalogue); sold back to Kann relations; [3] inherited by M. Ravin, Paris; sold 1953 via (Robert Lebel, Paris) to (Jacques Seligmann and Co., New York, no. 8081); [4]sold to Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 7 January 1957 as Martin Schaffner; gifted to the Denver Art Museum, 1961 [1] In their 1840 publication, C. Grüneisen and E. Mauch indicate that the painting belonged to the patrician house of Schad and had passed through inheritance to the Count von Leutrum. [2] Exhibited in Munich in 1901, Verein bildender Künstler Münchens, Sezession, Ausstellung von Meisterwerken der Renaissance aus Privatbesitz, cat. no. 138, as a member of the Schad von Mittelbiberach family.
