Hazel Cline Lennartson gave this pattern to Whitehill. The orignal quilt was probably made as a gift for a bride in the Lennartson family, with each of her friends or family members contributing a block. In the second quarter of the nineteenth century, quilts were often made by a group of family and friends. Each person would contribute a block, sometimes signed and dated, which would be joined to the work of others. The completed quilt was frequently a going away present for a beloved member of the community or a gift for a bride-to-be. The pattern of this mid-twentieth-century example comes from a quilt made about a century earlier
