The subject and primary decoration of this chintz is an actual event from the Mexican-American War (1846-48): the Battle ofn Resaca de la Palma ("Palm Ravine"), which took place on May 9, 1846. The fabric design adapts figures from contemporary lithographs by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888). Although perhaps better known for his later partnership with James Ives, Currier published seventy lithographs of scenes from the Mexican-American War.
