The Denver Art Museum (DAM) today announced the upcoming exhibition, Starring Linda: A Trio of John DeAndrea Sculptures, featuring Linda, Clothed Artist and Model and Nude with Black Drape. Two of the sculptures belong to the DAM, while Nude with Black Drape is a newly completed work that rounds out the trio. The exhibition will be on view at the DAM from April 19, 2015–June 21, 2015.
Colorado artist John DeAndrea is internationally celebrated for his hyperrealist nude or partially dressed human figure sculptures that are typically posed in true-to-life positions, pushing the boundaries of realism to the extreme.
“DeAndrea is a master of illusion,” said Gwen Chanzit, curator of modern art at the DAM. “The polyvinyl material he used to make Linda enabled him to render her absolutely lifelike, even putting human hair into the sculpture so it appears to be growing from follicles. The drawback is that polyvinyl darkens when exposed to light, so we try to preserve the work by making Linda a ‘rare sighting’ at the museum.”
A crowd favorite since her first appearance in 1984, Linda is a sculpture of a sleeping woman whose authenticity and coloring prompts visitors to question whether she is real or not. Linda was last on display at the DAM in 2009 and has since been kept in darkened, climate-controlled storage to ensure her preservation.
“Visitors will be excited to hear Linda is returning once again to the museum after a long hiatus,” said Christoph Heinrich, Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the DAM. “Linda always captivates visitors and we are thrilled to display two additional works of art from DeAndrea with this new exhibition.”
Starring Linda: A Trio of John DeAndrea Sculptures will be featured in the Martin and McCormick Gallery and will be included with general admission.
