Videos with Famed Concept Artist Iain McCaig Take You Behind the Scenes of Star Wars

Iain McCaig is an internationally recognized, award-winning artist, and a leading motion picture conceptual designer. He worked as a concept artist for Lucasfilm on Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith; McCaig also consulted on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Many of his original concept drawings and storyboards for these films are currently on view at the Denver Art Museum in Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume. In these videos, take a look at some of his work as he shares his thoughts on creativity and his memories about contributing to the Star Wars universe.

"I haven't met anyone who can't draw," McCaig says in this video. The key lies in the process. He reveals some tricks from his three-step process for “genius” drawings.

McCaig has always loved exploring how good and evil are portrayed in art. He was presented with the perfect opportunity to depict the contrasting forces in his own work while designing two iconic Star Wars characters—Darth Maul and Padmé Amidala.

Shannon Robb is the communications and public affairs coordinator at the Denver Art Museum. Her favorite exhibition that has been on view at the museum is Women of Abstract Expressionism.
