Fall in Love with Art & Creativity

February 2019 Family Fun at the DAM

Note: Youth 18 and under enjoy free general admission to the Denver Art Museum every day. Dior: From Paris to the World is a ticketed exhibition, which is not included in general admission.

Enjoy Free First Saturday: February 2

Your family will adore Free First Saturday on February 2! You can:

  • See the new exhibition Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze.
  • Take a walk on the wild side in the family fun space, A Walk in the Woods. Play, imagine, and make art to take home. Spot birds in a colorful flock, mix-and-match animal costumes to create new creatures, build horse sculptures inspired by artist Deborah Butterfield, and make a shadowbox to display your favorite creatures.
  • Drop in and listen to the stories behind a special object at the bilingual program Cuentos del Arte. Stories are at 11:30 am and 1 pm.
  • Watch Javier Flores demonstrate woodcut prints in the Print Studio, and make your own prints. Flores is in the Print Studio noon-3 pm Feb. 2 and 3.

Explore Dior: through March 17

The exhibition Dior: From Paris to the World is packed with fashion and an audio guide for kids. Follow along as Christian Dior’s sister Catherine shares stories and insights about the dresses and more. At the end, take home and try your hand at your very own puzzle coat.

Flip Over Foxy & Shmoxy: February 10

On February 10, our resident fox art detectives will be at it again with a new clue. Pick up a letter from the Fox Box and follow the hints and (paw) prints to catch Foxy and Shmoxy: Art Detectives in the galleries at 10:30 am and 11:30 am.

Spread the Love at Create Playdate: February 13

Create Playdate returns with hands-on activities for kids ages 3-5 and their adults. Join us on February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day, 10 am─1 pm where we’ll explore Nicole Banowetz’s The Incubation Effect. We’ll make our own bugs inspired by Banowetz, then we’ll used our investigation skills to observe to discover more about this immersive piece of art.

Captivate Loved Ones at Create-n-Takes: Weekends

Bring a loved one and check out the brand new Create-n-Take, “Animate an Adventure.” Follow a young girl on adventure through the arctic tundra in the video game Never Alone then bring your own adventure to life in a flipbook! Next, head over to “Sew Wild” where you and your loved one can create a story inspired by Carol Eckert’s Beware of Cranes.

Have a Heart

From February 11–15, you’re invited to show your love for a favorite work of art by placing a paper heart on the floor in front of your artwork crush.

Visitors show their love for Yayoi Kusama's CAN-CAN, on view in Stampede: Animals in Art. From the Collection of Robert and Lisa Kessler.

Lindsay Genshaft is manager of family and community programs at the Denver Art Museum.
