This month’s creative takeover of Untitled Final Fridays is by the masterminds behind Birdy Magazine—connectors of all things music, comedy, and culture in the Denver scene. We’re so excited to see what they have in store for the night, which they’ve themed “The Cuckoo’s Nest!” so you know it’s going to be interesting! Get to know the minds behind the mag—Christy Thacker and Jonny Destefano—as they answer a few questions and get us amped up for the big event!
DAM: So … what do you do, and why do you do it?
Christy Thacker and Jonny DeStefano: Birdy explores and documents the art and culture of our current time in Denver, Colorado and beyond. We are an eclectic, tastemaking venue documenting the cultural landscape by featuring locally—and nationally—recognized writers, artists, comics, and more.
Offering an ever-expanding spectrum of written and visual “exhibitions,” we advocate creative exploration of art and ideas in a positive environment, every month. Birdy is fundamentally a vehicle and voice for local talent and compassionate business—a paper museum for the community, by the community.
Ultimately, we are artists ourselves and want to make a living doing what we love and helping others.
DAM: What’s your favorite place in Denver?
Birdy: Denver Botanic Gardens / Cheesman Park. Not a week goes by that we don’t use our membership at the gardens and/or hang in the middle of the park. Much of Birdy is conceptualized there.
DAM: What’s a movie that you can quote every line?
Birdy: Jaws. “Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish! Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow ya whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back the tourists, that'll put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant! I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief.”
DAM: How would you define a creative?
Birdy: A person who has no choice but to make. One who can tangibly express the intangible. A visionary innovator who makes ideas come to life in the real world.
DAM: If you could express yourself in any other medium, what would it be?
Birdy: That’s a tough one. We love all forms of art. Off the bat, we’d say film, music, and international public art project curation.
DAM: If you could collaborate with anyone (past or present), who would it be?
Birdy: Again, we have many muses and heroes. Trent Reznor / Friedrich Nietzsche / Godzilla / Ernest Hemingway / Mark Mothersbaugh / Jean Baudrillard / Richard Pryor / Ad-Rock / Nayyirah Waheed / Christy’s little sister Katie.
DAM: What’s an exhibition that doesn’t exist, but probably should?
Birdy: 1) An all-shark exhibition. 2) A trampoline/bounce house/Discovery Zone Nerf fight exhibit, where art is painting on the walls and scuffing is welcome.
DAM: What is a museum?
Birdy: A shame-free space, which preserves and protects humankind’s utmost valuable documentations and expressions of life, culture, art, and science. A place of free speech and free ideas.
DAM: If you could do anything you want in a museum, what would it be?
Birdy: Have an overnight sleepover party with plenty of hide and seek, projected movies, and rooftop access for star viewing. Velociraptor optional.
DAM: You’re passing out invitations to your event - what do they say??
Birdy: They say this!
