Shaping the West: American Sculptors in the 19th Century

The DAM’s Petrie Institute of Western American Art in collaboration with the National Western Stock Show’s Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale presents a one-day symposium exploring western American sculpture in the 19th century.

 

"Shaping the West" features five prominent American art scholars and curators discussing the western subjects of four American sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Paul Manship, Hermon Atkins MacNeil, and Charles M. Russell, plus topics such as why the Broncho Buster became a cultural icon and was depicted differently by artists like Frederic Remington and Solon Borglum.

Additional Details
The Petrie Institute of Western American Art’s permanent collection will be highlighted in the Dietler Gallery of Western Art on level two of the Hamilton Building, as well as Creating the West in Art on level seven of the North Building. The Masterworks of Charles M. Russell: A Retrospective of Paintings and Sculpture will be open for viewing in the Gallagher Family Gallery in the Hamilton Building.

Andrew J. Walker, Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of American Art, St. Louis Art Museum, speaks on “Hermon Atkins McNeil and the 1904 World’s Fair: A Monumental Program for the American West."

 

Thayer Tolles, Associate Curator, Department of American Paintings and Sculpture, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, presents “Circling the Borders: Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Western Sculpture."


Peter H. Hassrick, Director Emeritus, Petrie Institute of Western American Art, Denver Art Museum, discusses “Broncho Busters: Frederic Remington and His Cowboy Competition.”

 

Sarah Boehme, Director, Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas, speaks on “Charles Marion Russell: Waxing Creative.”

 

Moderated by Alice Levi Duncan, Director, Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, and Patricia Limerick of the University of Colorado’s Center of the American West.
