Postcommodity is the Native Arts Artist-in-Residence for the spring. Postcommodity is an interdisciplinary arts collective comprised of Raven Chacon, Cristóbal Martínez, Kade L. Twist, and Nathan Young. From May 2– May 6, they will be working in our Artist-in-Residence studio during museum hours creating and editing a multi-channel video piece. More

See artist Kevin Pourier at work creating carved buffalo-horn jewelry in the Native Arts Artist-in-Residence Studio from January 20 through February 1.

Drop in from 1-3 pm on the weekends below to meet the artist and explore his artmaking process first hand:

Pourier’s finished works will remain installed in the Native Arts Artist-in-Residence Studio for visitors to browse between February 1 and March 15.

On Oct. 14 and 16, bring toda la familia and drop in between 10 am and 4 pm to celebrate creativity and cultura with Artesano-in-Residence Oscar Becerra Mora. Visit the maestro as he works. He will share his inspirations and processes as he works in cartonería, or Mexican paper sculpture, and how this technique plays a large role in the cultural expressions of the holiday of Día de los Muertos.

All Artesano-in-Residence activities are drop-in and included with general admission. More

Prepare for Día de los Muertos by making your own nicho with artesano-in-residence, Oscar Becerra Mora, visiting from Mexico City. These nichos celebrate life by poking fun at death. They are mixed-media shadow-boxes that contain lively scenes of mini-skeletons. Create yours with inspiration from DAM collections.

DAM Artist-in-Residence Rose Simpson Inspires Colorado Scholastics Winners

As a museum educator, I find most of my days at work to be wonderful, but, every once in a while, my job provides me with some truly extraordinary experiences. Like when eight Colorado Scholastics winners were chosen by the Denver Art Museum for an “artist encounter” with our current Native Arts Artist in Residence, Rose B. Simpson. The artist encounter on March 24 was a rare opportunity for these young sculptors to speak with Rose, tour her works on view, and spend a little time in her studio creating. More

Jeffrey Gibson: Powwow Arts as Contemporary Inspiration

Thursday, March 20, 2014 - 5:30pm6:30pm.

Interdisciplinary artist Jeffrey Gibson will discuss how powwow arts have inspired his art, including his ongoing series of adorned punching bags that draw from adornment found on women’s dance clothing. Gibson's interest in powwow culture will also inform his upcoming summer 2014 residency in the Native Arts Artist-in-Residence program at the Denver Art Museum (specific dates to be announced). Recent works by the artist are currently on exhibit in the American Indian galleries.
