Over his career, Don Wallance designed fourteen industrially produced flatware patterns for H. E. Lauffer, of which Design 9 was one. Design 9 was marketed as an inexpensive alternative to other designs produced by Lauffer, and was intended for casual dining. The lower price was achieved by forming the forks and spoons from a relatively thin metal bent along the axis of the broad handles, adding strength and dimension.
