Denver-based Mathias Leppitsch’s Light: Obelus I is a light-emitting sculpture with a cast concrete shade element and curved metal stand. Light: Obelus I builds on Leppitsch’s longstanding interest in hydraulically inflated sheet steel sculpture and the re-appropriation of this fabrication method to create a related, yet ever evolving body of work. An exploration of contrasts, the lamp’s concrete lighting element has an unusual soft, pillow-like appearance and seemingly “floats” over the thin metal base. The work blurs the line between functional object and sculpture, being equally interesting both turned on and off.
