In 1886, the U.S. government forcibly removed the Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo and his followers, including the man depicted here, from their traditional homelands in the Southwest. In order to paint from live models, George de Forest Brush rushed to Florida where they were being held as prisoners at Fort Marion. He had only a short time with these Apache people before they were removed to Alabama and, ultimately, to what is now Oklahoma.
