Brazier (Hibachi) with Poem and Bamboo by Suzan Sakasho (Hagino Shobei), (active early 1900s) Japan, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture about 1912-26, Taisho period Lacquer on wood, metal Funds from John and Carson Taylor in honor of the Asian Art Association's thirtieth anniversary 2012.298 This reddish-brown lacquer (tame nuri) brazier was used in the preparation of steeped tea (sencha). Made by Suzan Sakasho at the age of 83, it is decorated with an image of bamboo and a poem that reads: Dewdrop covered chrysanthemum / Cold gem white / A necklace of pine needles strung by the wind / An elegant jade, elegant jade / The pitiable end of September / Evening dew like pearls / A moon like a bow.
