Yasutani Bisei depicted a scene with kimono fabric drying in an autumn breeze. Details of seasonal flowers and grasses were executed in raised lacquer (taka makie) against a neutral ground of tan-colored lacquer. Traditionally, a kimono was cleaned by unstitching it, washing its fabric sections separately, and stretched them to dry. Born in Mikawa, Ishikawa prefecture, Bisei studied lacquer art in Kanazawa from 1916 to 1924 then moved to Tokyo to continue his lacquer career.
