David True’s painting, Blue Sea, is an abstracted view of a childhood memory. Here, the geometrical silhouette of a ship is contrasted against the deep blue waves of a stormy sea and silhouetted against a puff of white clouds against a brilliant blue sky takes on a dream-like quality—no surprise, since True considers himself a Surrealist guided by his unconscious. True’s polished style, feel for saturated color, and striking contrast are the stuff that that stick in our memories, and perhaps evoke similar memories from long ago.
