Walnut
Gift of Rev. B. J. and Grace George, 2009.275

George Nakashima often worked with untrimmed slabs of wood, particularly walnut, and often left cracks and holes in the final product. This coffee table, a piece of wood with mostly unfinished edges supported by one slab leg and one tapered leg, is simple and rustic. The table is like something an American pioneer or an English farmer might have hammered together, yet its glowing finish and carefully controlled scale evoke both Japanese and modern simplicity.
