Harry Fonseca was a self-taught artist whose early paintings featured themes from his Maidu heritage and often depicted dancers and the well-known trickster figure Coyote. Here Coyote wears a traditional cape made of the feathers of the nearly extinct California condor. The American Indian collection of the Denver Art Museum holds one example of this rare type of garment.
