Snow II
- Steven Gontarski, 1972
- Born: Philadelphia, PA
- Work Locations: London, England
Although London-based artist Steven Gontarski's style is a sort of neo-Baroque, the materials and finishes of his work are distinctly futuristic. He began his career making figurative textile works, fluid, seamless forms built from wood, Perspex and wadding and coated in fabric or PVC. His current sculptures are painted fiberglass figures or busts presented in a pallet of rich metallic colors. These works are simultaneously natural and unnatural; realistic in detail (although usually over life-sized) and yet somehow contorted and irregular. The glossiness and fluidity of his sculpture seem to suggest the flow of movement frozen in time. Snow II represents the inspiration Gontarski finds in the motions and actions of snowboarders.
