Gilbert and George are two English artists who met in 1967 as students at St. Martin’s School of Art in London; the two soon began working together under a single title in a variety of media. They have since become internationally recognized for their large-scale photo-composites, rendered in brilliant colors reminiscent of stained-glass windows, but teeming with sexuality or morbidity. In 1980, Philip Haas directed The World of Gilbert & George, a film documenting their controversial work and their lives, and in 2001 The World of Gilbert & George: The Storyboard, was released as a counterpart book. The book includes the complete text of the film as well as around 900 ink wash drawings by Gilbert & George that accompany every scene and shot in the film.
