One of the most important and successful painters of the New York School, Joan Mitchell was often referred to by her peers as a "painter's painter." Mitchell spent her time in Paris, and later, in Vétheuil , where she painted “Dune.” “Dune” perfectly captures Mitchell’s lifelong commitment to conveying a sense of light on the canvas, responses to place, and her methodical approach to painting — in stark contrast to the more spontaneous gestures of some of her Abstract Expressionist colleagues
