The imagery depicts a scene from the Tales of Ise, stories that relate the amorous adventures of a young courtier, traditionally identified as the ninth-century poet Ariwara no Narihira. Here irises grow in the water beside a garden bridge, and a male figure appears on the interior of the upper flap.
