Known Provenance
Jacques-Andre-Joseph Aved [portrait painter and collector in Paris], by 1760; purchased October 1760 from Jacques-Andre-Joseph Aved by Princess Karoline Luise von Baden [1723-1783, wife of Carl Friedrich]; Collection of the princely House of Baden until 1919 [on public view in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe since the opening in 1846]; State of Baden, on view at the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe, until 1932;[1] Purchased 1932 by Dr. Beets, Amsterdam. (Kunsthandel P. de Boer, Amsterdam), by 1935.[2] Private Collection, Amsterdam. (Jack Kilgore & Co., Inc., New York), by 1997; purchased 1997 from (Jack Kilgore & Co., Inc.) by the Denver Art Museum. [1] the painting was declared as a 'Fideicommiss' after Princess Karoline's death in 1783. So it remained – although on public view in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe since the opening in 1846 – the property of the princely house of Baden until the revolution of 1919. After WW I a contract between the new Republic of Baden and the last Grand Duke Frederic II settled that the Kunsthalle and the whole collection will be the property of the State of Baden. See email by Dr. Holger Jacob-Friesen, Senior Curator of Old Master Paintings at Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, 9 April 2014.
