From 1967 until 1974, Tadek Beutlich explored the three-dimensional possibilities of textiles on a grand scale. He made enormous hangings from rough fibers such as sisal and jute -- sometimes dyed, sometimes not -- that displayed their different appearances and textures when frayed, twisted, or plied (that is, when two or more strands are twisted together). In Moon Worshippers, a central area of vastly oversized plain weave contrasts against a frizzy halo and a cascade of threads that dissolve into wispy ends.
