Trial in the Street (1 of 2 genre paintings) Korea late 1700s-early 1800s, Joseon dynasty Ink and light color on paper Museum purchase 1972.65.2 This is a typical Korean genre paintings depicting a common scene of country life. A clerk is shown writing down the case described by two villagers at the bottom left of the trial scene. The appearance of the magistrate on a sedan chair shaded by a parasol suggests that somewhat arbitrary judgment will be passed once he has read the clerks’ summary. This was probably in a series of similar scenes from a folding screen, including a painting showing a picnic.
