Korean documents record that porcelains with underglaze blue designs were received by the Joseon court as gifts from China’s Ming dynasty Emperor Xuande (reigned 1426‒1435). Soon after, Korean potters began to paint cobalt designs on their white porcelain ware. In Korea, as in China and Japan, dragons are associated with water, rain, and clouds, linking them to agricultural prosperity. They connote positive qualities and are a frequent subject in Korean artwork.
