Architecture, Design & Graphics: Curatorial Internship - Spring

 

Position Purpose

  • The purpose of this internship is to contribute to the curatorial department and gain practical hands-on knowledge of the Architecture, Design & Graphics department within the Denver Art Museum, a non-profit institution.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Engage in directed research on upcoming exhibitions
  • Conduct research on recent and potential acquisitions for the permanent collection
  • Upkeep of the archive files and other departmental resources
  • Assist with special projects such as writing didactic materials as needed
  • Address a wide range of issues related to the department

Job Qualifications

  • Strong interest in design and/or curatorial practice
  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Be able to work independently, thoroughly and with attention to detail
  • Must have familiarity with academic research sites, such as JSTOR and Avery
  • Familiarity with architecture and/or art historical works and terminology
  • Comfort using university and public libraries

Assistant Project Manager/Assistant Registrar

 

Position Purpose

  • Position is full-time but split half-time between the Exhibitions and Registrar Departments. Assist Exhibitions Department in managing rotations and exhibitions including oversight of related budgeting, scheduling, meeting and contractor coordination. Assist Registrars Department in processing image rights requests, coordinating incoming and outgoing art shipments, processing incoming and outgoing art, and creating and maintaining records and legal documentation for acquisitions, deaccessions, and loans.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the planning, scheduling, preparation and installation of rotations and exhibitions
  • Identify, assign and coordinate an Exhibition Designer, Graphic Designer and editor, as well as other team members, to projects as needed
  • Work closely with all ECS divisions to ensure that institutional priorites regarding exhibitions, rotations and other installations are met
  • Manage and track assigned exhibition and rotation budgets and approve and track all related invoices
  • Work closely with Associate Director of Exhibitions on budgeting and scheduleing for future rotations and exhibitions
  • Process internal and external image rights requests under the Museum’s Rights and Reproductions policies and procedures
  • Assist with processing new acquisitions, incoming and outgoing loans, and deaccessions; create and maintain the legal, catalog, appraisal, activity, source, numbering, and condition documentation of these collections including generation and maintenance of all related legal paperwork, database and hard file catalog records.
  • Coordinate packing and domestic/international shipping and related customs documentation of incoming and outgoing art.
  • Assist in maintaining clean conditions, access, supplies, and inventory of Registrar’s Holding Storage.
  • Assist in managing logistical arrangements (legal documentation, shipping, customs, couriering, and conditioning) for temporary and special exhibitions as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Experience working on exhibitions, museum databases, and general project organization required. Prior exposure to image rights, cataloging and conditioning practices, and art handling preferred.

Audio Assistant

 

Position Purpose

  • Temporary staff needed to distribute and collect audio tour devices, assist and instruct visitors for Yves Saint Laurent exhibition March 24 – July 7, 2012.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Position Purpose

  • The Adult and College Programs Film & Media intern will assist in documenting and producing media related to programming events. This position requires a commitment to attend Untitled events, which take place on the final Friday of every month; additional event attendance will be determined as necessary.

  • The primary task of this internship is to research works of art in the DAM’s collection for specific needs in school, teacher, family and adult programs. Education - Family Programs Intern

 

Position Purpose

  • Family programs are designed to engage families in activities that relate to the art and further exploration and learning through in-gallery interpretive components, summer camps and classes, drop-in activities and events. Intern will be responsible for providing support to Family Programs staff including maintenance of in-gallery activities, support for family events as well as research projects.

Education - School and Teacher Programs Internship

 

Position Purpose

  • This internship is designed to help us accomplish our goal for this audience: to provide interactive experiences of DAM collections and exhibitions that emphasize three areas of learning that contribute to school education in visual arts, language arts and literacy, social studies and history: aesthetic experiences (heightened sense awareness and visual skills); cultural awareness (focus on social context and art history); creativity (critical thinking and divergent thinking skills)
  • The DAM serves students ages pre-school through 12th grade and teachers of all subjects but especially the regular elementary classroom teacher, and specialists in arts, language arts and social studies.

Education - Summer Teaching Internship in Community and Family Programs 2012

 

Position Purpose

  • Come learn about museum education at one of the most nationally recognized family-friendly art museums in the country! This internship provides you the opportunity to aid the Denver Art Museum’s Community and Family Programs staff in providing unique and creative summer art experiences for children and families, including assisting in camps and classes, welcoming and orienting summer groups, and contributing to the maintenance of our in-gallery, check-out, and drop-in programs.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist summer camp and class instructors in working with students 4-15 as they explore their creative potential.
  • Support on-site coordinator with camp and class check-in and out, lunch, and snack times.
  • Conduct pre-visit calls to visiting day care, school and other summer groups to help them prepare for their experience at the museum.
  • Welcome these summer groups and assist them on-site, including orienting chaperones, answering questions, leading groups to kid-friendly areas, and other duties as required.
  • Support Family Programs Assistant with on-site maintenance of in-gallery games and activities, check-out, and drop-in programs.
  • Conduct observations and provide feedback to Community and Family Programs staff.

Education or Formal Training

  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a graduate or undergraduate program in Art History, Education, Museum Studies, Studio Art or related field.

Manager of Facility Services

 

Position Purpose

  • The Manager of Facility Services assists the Associate Director and Director in maintaining a building environment in line with the goals of the institution. Ensures the safety of staff, and guests and manages the daily operations of the division.
  • Implements, interprets and enforces department and museum policy and procedures.
  • Assists the Associate Director in the development of policies and procedures for the division and the museum.
  • Manages all aspects of building operations including mechanical equipment and building controls associated with the museum’s physical plant. This includes the basic operation, and maintenance of al roofing systems, window systems, grounds maintenance, and electrical systems to assure maximum efficiency and performance.
  • Assists the Director and Associate Director with operational, personnel and capital improvement budget preparation.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • With the Associate Director establishes, develops and implements department goals, and position workloads.
  • Directs daily scheduling activities and assists in solving scheduling issues, to include approval of requests for individual vacation and sick time requests.
  • Oversees all established training to ensure completion to include physical and procedural training as required by department policy.
  • Plans & coordinates project workloads and assists Associate Director in securing needed funds, defining job scopes, contractor selection and daily organization of project workloads.
  • Directs plans, coordinates and schedules event support activities relating to special exhibitions, artwork installations, and rotations for facility department personnel.
  • Manages museum phone and computer systems and interfaces with City communications staff members and IT staff members in planning, coordinating and maintaining these systems.
  • Represent the Director or Associate Director in meetings and official functions when they are unable to attend.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, contractors, various representatives of public and private entities, policy making bodies and the general public.
  • Oversees the daily office operations to ensure all office procedures/ standards are maintained at an acceptable level.
  • Interviews and participates in hiring process of Facilities division personnel and coordinates all contractor activity on museum campus.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and cope with continual interruptions and pressure ensuring crisis stability with the capability of making effective decisions in a high stress environment..
  • Experience, knowledge and skill in all major building systems including HVAC, refrigeration and electrical.
  • Familiar with OSHA regulations and implementation of OSHA safety rules and regulations.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft word processing, Excel spreadsheets, Access database and Microsoft Project.
  • Advanced organizational, problem solving and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, business writing skills and policy development.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities or construction management is preferred.

Experience

  • Five years of previous supervisory experience in facility management or construction management is preferred. Additional appropriate educational certifications may be substituted for a portion of the five year requirement if applicable.

Position Purpose

  • The Manager of Protective Services assists the Associate Director and Director in maintaining a building environment in line with the goals of the institution.   • Assists the Director and Associate Director with operational and personnel budget preparation.

  • Coordinates with the area supervisor the daily operations of the main operations center to assure all standards, procedures and policies are being met.
  • Oversees and assures a successful museum health and safety program.

  • Assures all established training is completed, to include physical and procedural training, required by department policy.

  • Ability to produce under extremely tight deadlines and challenging conditions making effective decisions under stress.

Experience

  • Five years of previous supervisory experience in private security, or business administration is preferred. Experience in police, or military will be considered towards meeting this requirement. Master Teacher of Western American Art

 

Position Purpose

  • Create programming, training, web content and installed interpretive materials that make the Western American collections and temporary exhibitions accessible and enjoyable to adult and family audiences, students and teachers.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop interpretive plans for temporary exhibitions and collection reinstallations. Work will primarily be with the Western collections, but may occasionally expand to other collection areas as needed.
  • Create programming and interpretive materials such as labels, audio, video, family activities, and interactive educational materials for collection galleries and exhibitions; collaborate effectively with other departments to do so; maintain these materials for public access.
  • Conduct art historical/contextual research as needed to create written, electronic and live programs as well as volunteer training.
  • Plan, implement and observe various kinds of visitor evaluation (such as focus groups, visitor panels, observations, and surveys) related to exhibitions, interpretive materials and programs; share results effectively. Keep up with research in the field on interpretive techniques, visitor experience in museums, access programming, and other work-related topics.
  • Coordinate docent training and create written training materials for master teaching collection area; participate in training for museum-wide school and adult tours.
  • Collaborate with other education staff on community, adult, college, family, school and teacher programs and materials related to master teaching collection areas.
  • Train staff, volunteers and interns on programs such as Hot Spots, backpacks, gallery activities, etc. related to master teaching collection areas.
  • Work effectively with individuals and organizations in the community and outside scholars and consultants as needed to complete all of the above.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts (corporate requests, grants, etc.) related to collection area and access programs as needed.
  • Supervise contract staff and interns as appropriate and participate in overall education department planning and budgeting activities.

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Western American art and museum visitors/informal learning environments.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with in-house teams and external groups
  • Ability to conduct art historical and visitor research
  • Ability to communicate effectively in group and individual situations as well as in written form; strong public speaking skills.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to work on multiple, detailed projects simultaneously.
  • Computer skills (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, social media)

Education or Formal Training

  • MA in art history, anthropology, museum education or related field

Experience

  • 3-5 years museum education experience required with some history of developing interpretive gallery materials.
  • Experience working with the general adult public, youth, families, teachers and school audiences preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required

TEXTILE CONSERVATOR

 

Position Purpose

  • The Denver Art Museum is seeking a full-time, assistant- or associate-level conservator to oversee the conservation needs of its textile collection. At this time, the museum is expanding its exhibit, storage and working spaces dedicated to textiles. The scope of this project will require working closely with the curator of textiles. Funding for this position is guaranteed for five years with the intent of extending it indefinitely.
  • The comprehensive holding of the Textile Art Department consists of more than 5,000 textiles, from ancient and archeological examples of pre-Columbian and Coptic textiles to contemporary art in fiber. The collection encompasses both flat textiles and costume items. Strengths of the collection include quilts, coverlets and samplers; Chinese costumes and textiles; substantial Indian and Indonesian holdings. In addition, there are 20,000 objects from the Native American Arts collection that contain textile components.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • The conservator will report to the Director of Conservation. Responsible for the care and conservation treatment of textile art objects.
  • The conservator will perform conservation treatment of museum objects as assigned; review objects for acquisition and loan purposes; assure accuracy and completeness of records and reports; supervise interns and volunteers on appropriate projects; share laboratory management duties as assigned and promote the conservation department through research, lectures, professional publications and teaching.

Job Qualifications

  • Sound work habits, personal initiative and organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent color-matching abilities are essential.
  • Candidate will uphold collegial and collaborative working relationships with conservation staff and other departments.

Education or Formal Training

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE he candidate should have a degree from a recognized conservation training program, or equivalent. A minimum of three years post-graduate experience is required.
